In promotion of Rick Ross & Meek Mill‘s new collaborative album, ‘Too Good To Be True,’ the duo have a sit down with Complex Media‘s music journalist, Speedy Morman for a 20 min interview.
The interview reveals some of their individual reactions to lyrical shoutouts from Beyoncé and JAY-Z to unpacking the stream of consciousness behind some of their most controversial lyrics, particularly a line that didn’t sit to well with Nicki Minaj.
Speedy addresses the Ross’ lyric on his track, ‘Apple of My Eye’ that addresses Meek’s former status with ex-girlfriend, Nicki Minaj. Speedy asks,
There’s a verse on ‘Apple of My Eye’ you say: I told Meek I wouldn’t trust Nicki/Instead of beefin’ withcha dog, you just give him some distance. Is that something you really said to him?
Rozay clarifies the lyric by stating, “That was a real line. And what I was referring to at the time was Meek and Drake having differences. That was just me flowing with my gut.” Meek interjects Rick’s answer by saying, “Ross don’t give a f**k.”
During the 28 min clip, Meek acknowledges how full circle it is to be mentioned by JAY-Z & Beyonce in their tracks, ‘God Did’ and ‘APESHIT’.
It was crazy when I heard Beyoncé say, “Free Meek!” I was in a jail cell [when I heard] ‘in the hood, like free Meek.’ I been around Hov a lot, but when I heard Beyoncé say it, of course, with Hov [alley-]oop, that s**t jumped me out the building.
